Finding Hope: Dale & Violet’s Journey with Dare to Dream Ranch

After 13 years in the Army— 4 yrs active duty made up with several missions around the world to include Guantanamo Bay Cuba and Kabul Afghanistan —Dale returned home carrying invisible wounds. The transition to civilian life was difficult, marked by anxiety, isolation, and a search for purpose.
Dale’s path toward healing really began when he discovered Dare to Dream Ranch, a nonprofit in Foster, Rhode Island, helping veterans and their families through alternative therapy programs. At the Ranch, veterans find opportunities to heal through nature, animals, and community—programs that restore dignity, build resilience, and create a sense of belonging.
His connection with the ranch began indirectly—his wife first connected with Karen Dalton, Founder & Executive Vice President, while Dale was deployed in Afghanistan. About ten years ago, after returning home, Dale became involved with the ranch and felt immediate connection. Working with the horses and participating in its programs helped him begin to find himself, his place in his family and work through his challenges.
However, one piece was still missing: a 24/7 companion to support him daily through PTSD, anxiety, and emotional trauma. That’s where Violet entered his story.
Through a $7,500 Impact Grant from the Lawson Charitable Foundation, Dare to Dream Ranch matched Dale with Violet, a psychiatric service dog trained to provide stability and support.
“In the moments of feeling lost, I remember I’m not alone in this journey of healing and self-discovery,” Dale shared. “Having Violet by my side now gives me a new strength. She continues to renew my faith that all veterans can feel whole again and brings me more hope that we can thrive after our service time.”
With Violet’s support, Dale has found renewed confidence and connection. His story shows what’s possible when compassion, dedication, and support come together. Thanks to a network of supporters, more veterans like Dale are finding their way to services like Dare to Dream Ranch—with hope, healing, and a loyal companion by their side.
“Meeting Dale and Violet firsthand left a lasting impression and a deep sense of pride in supporting such an honorable mission. Helping those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom is truly an honor.” – Nicole Anderson, Executive Director
