Nick’s House Boston

Providing Stability When Everything Else Feels Uncertain

When individuals and families receive a serious medical diagnosis, the impact reaches far beyond medical care. Life is suddenly filled with uncertainty — emotional strain, financial pressure, unfamiliar cities, and time spent far from home. At the Lawson Charitable Foundation, we understand that during these moments, preserving stability and dignity can be just as vital as treatment itself.

That belief is why we are proud to support the HEADstrong Foundation’s Nick’s House Boston program with a $15,000 Impact Grant.

Nick’s House exists to ease the unseen burdens families face during medical crises, offering a place of comfort, stability, and community so families can focus on healing without the added stress of financial hardship.

“That’s what Nick’s House is — it’s the support you never thought you needed.” -Sydney Carter

Sydney’s Story

At just 27 years old, Sydney Carter is a wife and a mother to her two-year-old daughter, Montana. Her life changed when she was diagnosed with Clear Cell Sarcoma, a cancer so rare it represents the 1% of the 1%.

Originally from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Sydney did what any young mother fighting for her life would do — she searched for answers. She traveled to New York. She sought second opinions in Houston. And ultimately, she came to Boston for world-class medical care.

Boston, however, was unfamiliar. It was her first time in the city. She didn’t know the streets, the systems, or the people. Alongside intensive treatment, she faced the emotional toll of being far from home.

“It’s a lot to carry as a 27-year-old wife and mom. To have this kind of support is unreal.”

Inside Nick’s House, Sydney found more than a place to stay. She found people from across the country walking similar paths. She found understanding. She found community.

“If something were to happen, there are people here who actually care.”

Our Mission in Action

Nick’s House Boston aligns with the Lawson Charitable Foundation’s Critical Needs giving area by addressing the financial and emotional strain families face during serious medical treatment. By providing a safe, supportive place to stay near medical care, this program helps families remain focused on healing without the added burden of housing costs or financial stress.

This work reflects our commitment to supporting individuals and families during moments of crisis — preserving dignity, stability, and connection when life feels most uncertain.

Preserving Life as Families Know It

Programs like Nick’s House allow families to endure hardship without sacrificing the life they know. By removing additional financial and emotional burdens, Nick’s House helps families stay together, grounded, and supported during moments that can otherwise feel isolating and overwhelming.

Healing does not happen in isolation. Sometimes it begins simply by being surrounded by people who understand, who listen, and who care.

In her powerful testimony, Sydney reflects on learning not to take life for granted, finding joy in the smallest moments, and discovering that healing can begin simply by being held when everything feels uncertain.
