A New Chapter for Marine SGT Craig Brady: A Day of Honor, Community, and Hope
On December 7, 2024, the Lawson Charitable Foundation had the privilege of attending the official key ceremony for Marine SGT Craig Brady and his family, hosted by Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) in Holden, MA. The event was a powerful reminder of the impact a dedicated community can have on the lives of those who have sacrificed so much for our country.
A Special Welcome and Private Tour
Upon arriving at the home site, several of us had the unique opportunity to join a private tour led by HFOT President/CEO, Brigadier General (USA, Retired) Tom Landwermeyer. For approximately 30 minutes, Tom walked us through the home, pointing out the many thoughtful, adaptive features designed to support SGT Brady’s independence.
From pull-down cabinets and roll-under sinks to wide doorways and a roll-in shower, every detail was intentional. Each feature addressed SGT Brady’s specific needs, ensuring he could live safely, independently, and comfortably. It was clear that HFOT’s dedication extended beyond construction — they were building a home filled with dignity, care, and respect.
The Ceremony Begins
As the tour concluded, attendees began lining the driveway, each proudly waving the American flag. The sight was a moving tribute to the sacrifices made by SGT Brady and his family. Among the many attendees were veterans, state dignitaries, corporate sponsors, donors, neighbors, and a dedicated team of HFOT staff. Their collective energy and support were palpable.
The moment reached its peak as SGT Brady and his family were escorted to their new home by a parade of fire trucks and police vehicles. It was a grand, well-deserved entrance that signaled the start of a new chapter for the Brady family.
A Story of Sacrifice and Strength
SGT Brady’s journey is one of perseverance and courage. On January 7, 2010, during his third combat deployment with the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, he was conducting a battle damage assessment when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated. The blast resulted in the loss of his right leg below the knee and injuries to his back and forearm.
This new home represents more than just shelter. It symbolizes a fresh start and a path forward. With adaptive features that promote safety, mobility, and independence, SGT Brady can focus on his continued recovery and well-being of him and his family.
Homes For Our Troops: Celebrating 20 Years of Impact
Homes For Our Troops is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2024, marking two decades of dedication to improving the lives of severely injured veterans. To date over 400 homes have been built and HFOT’s work has changed the lives of hundreds of veterans and their families, and the impact is clear. According to a survey of veteran recipients, the results speak volumes:
- 93% of veterans reported a reduction in household stress.
- 92% of veterans regained some or much of their independence.
- The employment rate of veterans who received a home from HFOT shot up to 110%, while the employment rate for their spouse/caregiver spiked to over 295%.
These statistics reflect the profound impact of HFOT’s work and the life-changing potential of a specially adapted home.
